Being allowed to use the camera was a vote of confidence, for I knew that the cost of an orange-yellow box containing a roll of Kodak film represented another tiny cut from the monthly milk check. Developing the photos cost money, too. Mom and I removed film from the camera, sheltered it from the sunlight, carefully rolled it tightly, then placed it into the lumpy blue and white mailer and sent it to Ray’s Photo Service in St. Paul, Minnesota. A week or so later, as we so often did, Sam and I pedaled our bicycles furiously to the mailbox hoping to find the fat envelope containing finished photos.

When I was nine, Mom sent away for a box camera for Christmas. For me! It was plain, square, and simple, only able to take black-and-white photos, yet it was mine. Not much later, we were amazed by our Indiana relatives’ cameras with bright flashes—aluminum reflectors lighting up a dark room. Then instant color film and Polaroids appeared.

But for me, the old boxy black camera was good enough.
